It is strange how the wheel has turned. Google and other search engines were created as faster ways to find things on the Internet. They quickly replaced the slow and cumbersome search directories the Internet was built on e.g. Yahoo search directory. However, the directories are striking back. Now we have a situation where a search engine returns mainly directories in its search results.
Have you noticed how many Irish directory sites there are in existence nowadays? The search results are now clogged up with directory sites and 3rd party websites. Directories are websites that bring you to other websites. Website owners, in general, pay these directories to advertise on them. Sometimes you can get listings on these local directories for free.
Most of these directory sites are ugly as sin and are extremely unhelpful, but there are a few that are useful. There are benefits for website owners for advertising on these sites. You get extra exposure and the links back to your website will help your own websites ranking.
Example - If you enter ‘Kitchen Design Dublin’ into Google.ie you will notice that out of the top 10 results 4 of them are directories. 2 of them are ‘find a job’ directories.

Well known Irish directories are GoldenPages, GumTree, TheBestOf, BrowseIreland, YourLocal.
